Alaska: day two: musk ox farm

Next up: a visit to a musk ox farm. Did you know, musk ox hair can get spun into qiviut. It's very rare, each musk ox gets brushed one time a year, and gives off only 2-4 pounds of hair. This hair is spun and woven into hats, scarves and other pretty things by native Alaskans. It's very light weight, but keeps you VERY warm. Allie says she can only wear hers when it's less them 30 degrees outside. It's very expensive, because of it's rarity.

Owen and a musk ox.
 A beautiful view.

The kids got to be "helpers" during the tour.

Owen showing of a qiviut hat and a male musk ox.

These musk ox were just a year old, we could feed them through the fence.
 Alaska is very very pretty.

When learning about the musk ox, we were told that they love being in the snow. Kaiya asked if they make "musk ox angels" in the snow. We all, including the tour guide, had a great laugh.

Alaska: day two: reindeer

Sunday morning, we drove to the Reindeer farm. We started by exploring the grounds.
Owen and a moose skull.
 Enjoying some bunny time.
 Lucas was hungry.
Liberty was quite happy holding the rabbits.
Owen tried to get a sneak peak.
When we got to go into the farm, we had a lesson on reindeer (aka caribou). Both male and female reindeer have antlers, they grow a new set each year. When they are growing in, they are covered in a felt-like fur, that is very sensitive to touch. So, we couldn't touch them, though if they touched us, it was ok. They are very gentle, and love to eat. They don't have bottom teeth... just top ones.

We each got a cup of food to feed the reindeer. Owen was surrounded by animals bigger than himself, he was calm and brave. I'll admit, I was a little nervous.

When the cups of food were empty, we showed them our empty hands, and they would walk away.
 EMPTY HANDS!

 Three reindeer...
They had one bison on the farm. Her name was Dolly. Her best friend was a moose, who died a few months back.
Next, we got to see elk. Which aren't as friendly as reindeer, so we had to feed them through the gates.

Matt would find the greens that they liked, then would share them with the kids.

 More reindeer from Lucas' camera.

I love this picture of Allie!
After feeding them, we fed us. A lovely picnic in the Alaskan air. It was perfect.

Alaska! Let's start!

We took an 11 day trip up to Anchorage to visit Allie, Matt, Liberty and Kaiya. We had an amazing time and took over 1000 pictures. Luckily, we erased quite a few, and kept the good ones! So, here we go... ALASKA!
Owen and Lucas waiting for our plane.
Owen did great on the plane, as did Pengu.
Love is: Lucas giving the window seat to Owen. This was from Portland to Seattle. On the trip from Seattle to Anchorage, Owen gave the seat to Lucas for most of it. Then, reclaimed the window for landing.

Our first day, Saturday, we went to the Anchorage Weekend Market. Owen had his first "bizarre food" a reindeer hot dog.
 Family of three bears.

 Cousins!
After the market, we went to the Anchorage Children's Museum. It's a great museum. Owen really liked the "pully chair". Easily pulled him self up, then let go for a fun ride down.
The huge hit, was the bubble room. Lots and lots of bubbles.

Three bubbles going over three heads.
Then, ice cream time in the park. Allie is on the other side taking a picture of the kids from the other side.
For dinner, the adults ate a lot of king crab, while the kids enjoyed pizza/movie night. They watched old episodes of Batman.

After eating, the resumed watching under the table.
